Melbourne

Founded in 1835 by free settlers, Melbourne flourished in the Gold Rush of the1850's. Today, Melbourne is the capital of Victoria and has a population of over 3.7 million and is the second most populated city in Australia after Sydney. Melbourne is located in south eastern Australia on the shores of Port Phillip Bay. The city is large, rectangular shape and is on the northern banks of the Yarra River. It is a very cosmopolitan city, populated with peoples from all over the world.

As a result of the influx of immigrants from the days of assisted passage after World War 2, Melbourne offers the visitor a feast of gastronomical delights from around the world. Plus, only 50 kilometres from Melbourne is the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges, a region of scenic hills, forests… and over 200 wineries!!

Victoria is also home to many major sporting events such as the Formula One Grand Prix, Australian Open Tennis, Australian 500cc Motor Cycle Grand Prix and famous The Melbourne Cup horse race.
