Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory and is located in the far north of Australia. Darwin's original inhabitants were the Larrakia people and on September 9 1839 the HMS Beagle sailed into the harbour whilst surveying the area. The region was named Port Darwin by John Clements Wickham in honour of his former friend and shipmate scientist Charles Darwin. The city has had to be rebuilt twice; the first time following the air raids by the Japanese in WWll. Darwin was attacked by the Japanese on 19th February 1942 with the Japanese conducting two air raids from the same aircraft carrier fleet responsible for the attacks on Pearl Harbour. There were over 64 attacks to follow with the last being on 12th November 1943. The second time the city had to be rebuilt was after being completely devastated by Cyclone Tracey in 1974. This makes Darwin one of the country's most modern capitals.
